AFTF Statement on SB 1047 Veto

Today, Governor Gavin Newsom correctly vetoed SB 1047 – a dangerous piece of legislation that risked harming American AI research, economic growth, cost of living, and geopolitical advantage over China. As House Science Democrats wrote, “SB 1047 is skewed towards addressing extreme misuse scenarios and hypothetical existential risks while largely ignoring demonstrable AI risks”. By vetoing this bill, Governor Newsom protected California’s competitive AI startup ecosystem, world-class academic institutions, and independent open-source researchers worldwide.

Call-To-Action on SB 1047

California legislators, under the influence of Effective Altruism activists, are trying to sneak through a disastrous bill for open-source AI and the technology industry generally. SB 1047 creates an unaccountable Frontier Model Division that will be staffed by EAs with police powers, and which can throw model developers in jail for the thoughtcrime of doing AI research. It’s being fast-tracked through the state Senate. Since many cloud and AI companies are headquartered in California, this will have worldwide impact.

Legitimate concerns about speech such as threats, impersonation, fraud, or classified information are historically directed towards interpersonal communications.
